I got in an Isaactor mood again after picking up my old WIP, which is funny because the chapter I'm working on is mostly Hector bashing Isaac like the bitter ex that he is :P but yeah. They have a relationship. Not sure what kind of relationship, but they definitely have one. I wish at least one of the prequels fed me more than the smallest of breadcrumbs.

... I'm just weak for that "we're fundamentally incompatible and we are toxic for each other and we are using each other for our deepest selfish needs and yet we are so close that we're part of each other and I can't imagine my life without you" thing that is rotating in my head. Then you add the divorce, and you have a beautiful mess <3

Hecula:

"It's not my OTP," I say, as I squee fangirl-style everytime I see someone fall in hell with me, or even better draw fanart/talk about it. I may be in denial :P

Anyway, yadda yadda, it's abusive, it's gross, it's Problematic™, it hits those very nice tropes that make my brain rot faster than fruit in summer (age gap, abuse of power imbalance, mentor/protégé, manipulation...), IMO it enriches Hector's character arc of finding freedom and agency in the human world, I am utterly fascinated by how Dracula's feelings for Hector are described in Japanese, it's Lenector done right.

(I was about to tick "it would never work in canon but", just to get that bingo, but I can't lie. After all, it's canon and I have proof :P although I admit there is a lot of heavylifting to do here since we know very little of what Hector thought of Dracula pre-betrayal)

Isaacula:

The mirror opposite of Hecula. Isaac adores his Lord and would nullify himself for him, and Dracula is, at best, only mildly amused to have a dog at his beck and call, but won't grant him the Special Treatment that Isaac craves :P I still rotate in my head various possibilities on what Dracula does to Isaac, from completely ignoring him, to only feeding on him but pretty much for necessity, to also using him as a toy but without any sort of fondness, just a way to manipulate him and keeping him happy and compliant.

Sidenote, I find somewhat amusing that Isaac is "merely" Dracula's loyal servant in canon, as in one that simply didn't even think of betraying his Lord, but it's just so, so easy to imagine him as being utterly, selflessly devoted to the point of self-destruction. It's because of the collar and tattoos. Because Isaac has a fantastic character design that tells you everything you need to know about him without anyone explaining it to you. (and personally, I've always loved his line "if you have a good weapon, you use it, don't you?", which just. says a lot about him. my broken boy <3)

And second sidenote, I honestly wonder why any combination of Dracula/Hector/Isaac seems to be so unpopular, even back in the day when people were far less picky regarding ships :\ (N!Isaactor is quite popular, but I haven't found anything for N!Isaacula and N!Hecula. The latter sucks so I understand, but idk, are people really afraid of some good lord/servant ship even when positive like in the former's case?)

yea also it's chelley (chell/wheatley for the unacquainted). i don't actually know what the vibe check is on chelley these days i think chelldos is more common now at least on tumblr. and i am not arguing with that because that big robot is gay and frankly good for her. but i can say when i played the portal games back in like 2014 chelley had a fucking vice grip on the fandom. the soccerball was a tumblr sexyman, for goodness' sake. and of the squillions of chelley fics around at the time (some of them probably quite questionable in hindsight but we don't gotta talk about it right now) blue sky was the crown jewel.

the thing is? blue sky 100% deserves that spot. shit, it's one of my favourite fanworks ever.

arguably because it's not really focusing on being a shipfic. i know half this recommendation is talking about shipping but i'm giving some context here alright to the nouveau portal fans who were Not there in 2014 and i feel the need to justify like No This Fic Is Actually A Really Good Take On It Trust Me. we are not here to kiss the metal ball we are here to grab him by the lapels and watch him struggle to go from an objectively terrible person to a deeply insecure person three steps from relapsing Back into that terrible person to someone who actually has their moral and ethical shit together. i think it does portay glados in a less sympathetic light than some other fics but also bro (gender neutral) i was reading portal fic in 2014 and 2014 alone i saw so much worse than "yeah glados is still on her i'm-in-denial-about-my-humanity-and-taking-it-out-on-everyone-else schtick"

i'm sick of writing paragraphs. reasons why blue sky is really cool, fic spoilers minimal:

a redemption arc where a character's flaws are not skipped over; in fact, they are dragged into the light and shown off at all angles to be appropriately judged by the reader and the characters in story. no woobification here. if anything the opposite - blue sky takes opportunities to remind the reader wheatley is very capable of being a shit person and the fact that he is doing this whole redemption arc thing is important

but still acknowledging the trauma that is apeture science. saying shit's fucked up without excusing everything else that people did because of it

blue sky is definitely a wheatley centric fic (i don't think this is a bad thing because Let's Redeem Wheatley is a concept that requires a lot of narrative attention and heavylifting tbh) but it doesn't overlook chell's feelings about apeture and also about this whole oh wheatley's back situation. she's strong and badass but she's also allowed to have those feelings and be worried and anxious but also angry. and that doesn't make her not a badass. wah i love her

the town of eaden!!! chell has found a home after portal 2 and they are lovely and she loves them and they love her. i was obsessed with some of these characters as a teenager and they are all ocs. but they are so well written and integrated into the story so well that you can't help but love them. it is so easy to see why chell loves them and especially as wheatley gets attached to them too. it just. ough. it all feels so real they're all wonderful

bro (gender neutral) the redemption arc hinges not on romance or whatever but on the love one gives and receives by contributing to their community and finding their place and taking the things they've been told they're shit for their entire existence and spinning it into something that helps others. tell me that is not the best shit ever

Uhm, yeah, and I love Brittana! Why? Oh, uhmmm, idk haha I know they’re not interesting from a storytelling perspective or anything and the nonverbal moments are kinda meh and it’s not like they got any songs that did the narrative heavylifting or that they’re fun to speculate about. No I don’t see any potential for more meaningful songs they could have done, their duets were never that interesting anyway. I couldn’t possibly actually tell you why I’m so loud about loving them so please don’t ask too many questions. Then you might discover that no one could possibly have them as their favourite Glee ship, that’d be ridiculous. Their love wasn’t very convincing. And no one would spend hours upon hours writing about them or making gifs even, which everyone knows is a quick and easy things you can just do in your lunchbreak.

All in all please don’t inquire further because then you might discover that this is all a sham and I’m spending a good chunk of my free time lying about loving a fictional couple, because that’s a normal thing to do and a normal thing to accuse someone of.

You believe Knightfall to be impossible?

No.

I consider what kind of story the show is interested in telling and what seems like the obvious (or not) narrative path based on other stories to come to this conclusion.

Knightfall would be very, very unique if it were the path chosen. Cindemption alone is great, because when one talks about redemption arcs one gets people who don't understand why Vader died (parental sacrifice) or people who bring up Zuko as if you can only have one or two redemption arcs in media (both in number and type of structure) and so her story arc is actually fucking new and interesting. (I'm thinking particularly here of the type of villainess she is, especially as a Byronic hero lol).

But Knightfall has so much flavour to it I've never really seen in any other ship. The male healer, the female villainness, but she's structurally a protagonist, so he's like - the pretty boy love interest - but carries a lot of agency in the story! Angst, pain, worldviews challenged - like he's the first to do that in the story, asking her why she is the way she is, he ironically learns from her to ditch the self-sacrificing agenda - there's so much that's interesting about it I've never really found in another ship before. I could go on all day, and this isn't a Knightfall manifesto, but there really isn't anything like it.

I think so far the show has proven it's willing to be bold, and that's one of the things I admire about it. So when I think about viability of the ship I also consider that we should take the text on its own terms and its intertextuality (though in this respect I think occasionally people afford too much importance to source texts - including me). In doing that I think canon ships like BB and RN are very obvious (BB here doing some heavylifting with Beauty and the Beast, which is a case of where the fairytale stuff is actually relevant), whereas in the case of BB it would've been easy to read Blake/Sun, because guy gets girl, right lol.

In terms of in-universe, I don't think it's impossible, no, not if they've already committed to telling it and not if they've already committed to Cindemption, there's probably just going to be delicious angst and conflict. Which is why it's the most interesting, and I think complements the other ships in the show well.

That and the themes of forgiveness and reconciliation which can be explored through it (which the show seems most interested in doing - its narrative really isn't punitive) really resonate with me personally and I think align with what the story has already demonstrated.

When I think about points against it - the narrative beaten path like Jaune/Weiss, reformed guy gets girl he patiently waited for (fetch me a bucket), there’s one thing here I want to put in but I’m not going to vague about it lol, they're on the island together and fell one after the other etc. - I do think the coin is in the air right now. That ship breaks so many ship patterns though, so I'm dubious. I'm also a baby with a soft heart who can't handle being hurt so I'm not putting all my eggs in one basket, so to speak.

Though on that falling point, Cinder and Jaune were the last two out of the Vacuo portal, so what patterns are you willing to look for? Everything looks like a nail when one has a hammer.

That's why I'm always willing to couch my interpretation in scepticism. That being said, there is too much that's suspicious about Rhodopis, The Indecisive King, the given ship patterning, (what was going on with that manga panel), the anima/animus stuff, the Fall Maiden's lesson (pay attention to that post title), Reverse Salem/Ozma (and this one I think is significant in the respect of what is the actual superstructure of the story and why it's being told) and so on and so forth for me to ignore. It's just too much. So I oscillate regarding the possibility of it because I am baby, but nevertheless my attention does not stray from the ship. It interests me in the respect of wanting to unpack the story's engine and figure out to what degree they actually insert esoteric references into the story, what matters the most in how they tell the story (and the irony is that the show is really telling its own story first and foremost) etc. I have a curiosity about it.

Especially because it seems so fucking obvious if you're willing to look. I don't just mean their narratives being connected platonically, I mean romantically. Like what is going on! I feel like I'm going crazy!

the answer to that question would be this post but the tl;dr of it is i think alternian romance was intentionally designed not to create emotionally fulfilling relationships by doc scratch because it’s easier to manipulate people who are isolated. like from what we see in the comic being someone’s moirail means doing a lot of their emotional heavylifting, the brunt of which would usually be spread out among that person’s other friends, or even a therapist. and it also strips the emotional part of romantic relationships out of matespritship, even though, like. your “matesprit”/person you’re involved with should already be a big part of your emotional support system -- allocating the “platonic caring” part of a relationship to the pale quadrant limits the depth and complexity that “concupiscent” relationships can have. & i don’t mean this as “if you believe in quadrants you’re bad” or anything because it does make shipping fun as long as you don’t take it too seriously but the quadrants as a concept encourage a kind of compartmentalization of relationships that isn’t healthy

that said if i had to choose i’d say i preferred them flush because they both care about each other and want to Kiss

Need to protect civil servants working on disinvestment transactions, cash in on stock rallies

The disinvestment target of Rs 65,000 for FY23 has been viewed as somewhat underwhelming coming as it does on the back of a Rs 1.75 lakh crore target for the current year. With the benefit of hindsight, the Rs 1.75 lakh crore does seem to have been a bit of a stretch although if the LIC IPO goes through by March-end, that shortfall wouldn’t look so bad. Indeed, it is heartening to hear from Tuhin Kanta Pandey, the DIPAM secretary, that the IPO should go through by the end of the fiscal year.

To be fair to the government, while plain vanilla stake sales are not so difficult, a strategic sale or divestment can be a lot more complicated. Indeed, it would be pertinent to listen to and take note of what the revenue secretary Tarun Bajaj had to say on Wednesday. Bajaj observed that these transactions are difficult because ‘ten years down the line the decisions could come back to haunt us’. Although, the processes are robust, as Pandey pointed out, there is no doubt that privatising units or making strategic sales are becoming harder to do. That bureaucrats involved in these complex processes should fear penal action or harassment, at some point in the future, is unfortunate. Perhaps provisions need to be built into the laws to protect the civil servants working on these transactions because even though the sales take place through transparent bidding processes, there is clearly some anxiety that needs to be addressed.

To that end, the government must be congratulated for the sale of Air India; while the proceeds from the sale may have been negligible, the savings from repeated capital infusions by the government are enormous. This government has done well to say that it will exit most sectors and stay invested in just a handful. It must follow this strategy so as to save taxpayer money; for instance, the government proposes to infuse close to Rs 45,000 crore in BSNL in FY23. That is not a sum to be sneezed at and the government must find a way to spare the taxpayer this burden. Any solution that limits the government’s financial commitments would be welcome.

Bajaj also pointed out that it makes sense to have a smaller disinvestment target and over-achieve it, much like it has happened with the revenue collections in the current year. Indeed, given the kind of criticism the government has faced for not achieving disinvestment targets, that sounds like a good approach. While the sale of BPCL seems to be taking an inordinately long time, it could not be an easy exercise given the sheer size of the transaction. As Pandey pointed out, the SCI deal is dragging on simply because the ships are not always available for inspection by prospective buyers.

However, the government must strive to out-perform the disinvestment target and attempt to cash in on rallies in the stock markets. Pandey’s point that the government needs to be mindful of the interests of minority shareholders, so as not to create a supply overhang in a stock, is well taken. Nonetheless, stake sales must be carried out as frequently as possible.

The point is that, together with tax collections, non-tax avenues must fetch the government meaningful sums; else, with the tax collections target modest, there is limited fiscal space for the government to spend on capex. For FY23, the government has increased the capex outlay by 25% over the revised estimates for FY22.

Lower revenues force the government to rely on market borrowings to fund expenditure, which is not desirable. Indeed, unless the government is able to mobilise the necessary resources, it would be unable to continue with the capex push. While at some point the private sector must do the heavylifting in terms of investments, the government must have the resources to be able to complement that effort.
